A SUCCESSFUL community credits scheme has secured another four years of funding thanks to the Big Lottery.

The Volunteer Centre located on Acland Road in Dorchester launched the scheme several years ago to support people with learning difficulties in volunteering. Staff held a celebration at their building yesterday for all the volunteers, businesses and supporters of the scheme.

Marie Waterman, manager of the Volunteer Centre, said: “We are celebrating our award from the Big Lottery for more than £300,000 for the Dorset Credits Scheme to continue and expand. The scheme aims to support volunteer projects through adults with learning disabilities giving their time and skills. For every hour they work they earn a credit which can be used in a variety of social and physical activities. It’s been so successful are we are thrilled to be able to continue it.”

Osprey Leisure Centre is just one of the many businesses involved in the Community Credits Scheme. General manager Nigel Williams, said: “At Osprey we do all we can to support this. It is a fantastic scheme to help volunteers gain some work and use their credits - they can have a swim or use the gym. We are really glad to be part of it. We have lots of volunteers using our centre on a regular basis.”
