AN AFRICAN adventure helping impoverished communities is hitting the right note with a Portland musician.

Beth Rose, 25, has been selected to volunteer in Tanzania next month with international development charity Raleigh International.

She’ll be working with communities helping to build water supplies, supporting youngsters and living with a local family.

It’s an exciting new challenge for Beth who this year finished a three-year professional music degree at the BIMM Institute in Brighton.

Although her world has revolved around music, she has felt the call of helping others less fortunate after travelling to Nepal last year.

Beth has to raise £800 as part of the challenge and earlier this month hiked around Weymouth and Portland carrying a 10-litre water supply to raise awareness. Two thirds of citizens in Tanzania live without adequate access to safe water and sanitation.

Beth said: “I have always been involved in music and performing from a young age. But during my degree I began to realise that although I love singing, it isn’t something I want to pursue professionally in the long term, so I began to explore other passions.

“Last year, I challenged myself by embarking on a solo trek to Everest Base Camp; a physically and mentally challenging adventure. I loved the experience, and was particularly moved by the people of Nepal. Many were left with nothing, having lost their homes and their families in the disastrous earthquake, however their resilience, positivity and appreciation of life was inspiring.”

She added: “It motivated me to find ways to support disadvantaged communities around the world, and on my return, research led me to discover Raleigh’s International Citizenship Service Programme. I was selected to volunteer in Tanzania with Raleigh, on a three month International Citizen Service placement in September. Raleigh works with some of the world’s communities who have specifically requested their help.”
