IT WAS a proud family moment as two siblings handed over their donation of more than £1,300 to the Fortuneswell Cancer Trust after an epic journey across the nation.

Sarah and Dom Hannon from Dorchester, with support of mum Penny Sturt, trekked the width of the nation in support of their dad's ongoing battle with cancer.

The 190-mile coast-to-coast walk took the family from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay in North Yorkshire. A total of £1,395 was raised.

Sarah, 12 and Dom 14, were keen to get involved after hearing about the Fortuneswell Cancer Trust and their need for more funds to create a new cancer centre with radiotherapy facilities for west Dorset patients.

Their dad Andrew was diagnosed with stomach cancer last November and currently has to travel to Poole to receive radiotherapy treatment.

Penny said it had been "tough" on the whole family to have to commute to Poole for the treatment.

The trip took around three weeks in total, with the trio averaging around 10-miles a day and took them through three National Parks.

Penny said it has been great for the family, Andrew included, to have something to focus on since the cancer diagnosis and to know they were doing something to help others.

Penny said: "It took us only a couple of months really to raise this amount which is fantastic. I think we have recovered from the walk, just about. We had achy feet for quite a while. When we were walking we would get notifications on our phones about more donations coming in which was lovely to see and gave us the boost to keep going."

Ward sister, Sarah Burrows, was delighted with the donation and said it is a "big help" to the trust and their aim to create a new cancer centre.
