A MAN was left with a fractured jaw after an early morning assault in Weymouth.

The victim, a 23-year-old from Sherborne, was left unconscious after the incident, which is alleged to have taken place in East Street at the junction of Mitchell Street at around 4am on Sunday, September 18.

Police said the incident is believed to have involved three other men.

The victim was taken to Poole Hospital where he underwent surgery for a fractured jaw.

Detective Constable Sean Garrett, of Weymouth CID, said: “I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has information as to what happened to please contact Dorset Police.”

A 19-year-old man from Weymouth has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries until the end of October 2016.

Francis Drake, briefholder for community safety in Weymouth described it as an "appalling incident".

He said: "This is another nasty incident. I am getting concerned about the number of times this is happening in the town.

"We need our police officers to be more active and we need more on foot in the town. This is the second time an incident like this has happened in a short space of time.

"We need the general public to come forward if they saw anything relating to this incident so the police can do their job."
