A MAN has been charged in connection with a police chase that left two police officers injured.

A 22 year old from Liverpool has been charged with a host of offences followng an incident on Weymouth Way near Chafey's roundabout on Monday afternoon.

Police said a suspicious vehicle was spotted on Portland Beach Road at 12.50pm and did not stop for officers when requested.

A police spokesman said: "The vehicle – a blue Vauxhall Astra – was followed by officers. The car was seen to travel through the town along Buxton Road, Lanehouse Rocks Road, Abbotsbury Road, Radipole Park Drive and Dorchester Road before colliding with another vehicle – a green Mini Cooper – in Weymouth Way near to Chafey's roundabout."

Two police cars were also damaged in the incident.

The vehicle was abandoned and a man was arrested on suspicion of driving offences a short time later.

The 22 year old was today charged with driving a motor vehicle dangerously, failing to stop for police, driving otherwise than in according with a licence, driving without third party insurance and assaulting a constable in the execution of his or her duty.

He is due to appear before Bournemouth Magistrates' Court on Wednesday September 28.

The ambulance service attended as a precaution and the female driver of the Mini Cooper was treated for shock.

Weymouth Deputy Inspector Tony Burden said: “I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or manner of driving of the Vauxhall Astra to contact police."

Earlier on Monday, there were four police cars and a paramedic vehicle at Chafey's Roundabout, where the two vehicles are being recovered.

A spokesman for South West Ambulance Service said: "We were called to the scene shortly after 1pm this afternoon to a two car road traffic collision.

"The incident is ongoing, at the moment it appears there is one male causality, who is being treated at the scene."

There were no road closures but traffic was reported as heavy accessing the roundabout.
