FIRE crews from across the county have been called out to multiple chimney fires in the last week.

Firefighters from Wimborne requested further back up yesterday from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service after they were called out to a chimney fire in Colehill near Wimborne at 5.19pm.

On arrival, the crew used a triple extension ladder, roof equipment and chimney rods to extinguish the fire at a property on Dogdean.

The fire comes just days after fire services from Dorchester were called to a chimney fire on Thursday, October 20.

A small fire in the base of a chimney flue at a thatch cottage in Stratton was extinguished with 'minimal damage caused'.

A specialist aerial appliance was used and support crew from Weymouth also attended to assist with access and firefighting from the roof.

According to the fire service, a clean chimney can help prevent fires as it prevents a build up of soot and debris. You should make sure that your chimney or flue is inspected regularly.

Here is Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service's tips for chimney safety:

Chimneys should be swept:

At least once a year when using smokeless fuels

At least once a year when using bituminous coal

Every three months when burning wood

Once a year when using oil

Once a year when using gas

The following safety advice should always be followed when lighting an open fire or woodburning stove:

Don’t use flammable liquids such as petrol or paraffin to light your fire.

Don’t burn excessive amounts of paper or rubbish.

Don’t overload the fire with fuel.

When the fire is alight, check the loft space occasionally to make sure there is no smoke leaking from cracks, defective brickwork or mortar joints.
