TRAIN passengers escaped after an electrical explosion underneath a carriage.

No one was injured in the drama, which unfolded at Dorchester South Station last night.

One passenger, who had got off the train at Dorchester after travelling from Weymouth, took footage of the incident on his mobile phone.

Myles Harding, 17, and Jack Rowland caught this footage of the incident - please note there are some profanities in the footage:

Myles said he heard a ‘loud bang’ and several flashes ‘too bright to look at’ as flames engulfed the carriage several times.

He and a number of people on the platform screamed at those still on the carriage to ‘get off the train’.

Myles, a Weymouth College student who lives in Dorchester, said: “It was so scary. I make that journey to college and back every day and you just do not expect to see something like that.

“There was a loud bang and I quickly got my phone out to film it because I thought, no one is going to believe this.

“Then there were these really bright flashing lights and everyone was shouting. There were all these sparks, it was like a firework display.”

After the 'electrical arcing' stopped , people on the platform rushed towards the train to help get passengers off the carriage and to safety.

Myles said the train was still smoking and people seemed calm.

“Maybe they didn’t realise quite how dramatic it was.”

He added that friends had told him they had seen the flashes from Poundbury.

But as quickly as it had started, the drama was over.

Firefighters said the incident was over by the time they arrived. And police added that paramedics were called to the scene but were later stood down as no one was hurt.

All trains were cancelled between Moreton and Weymouth, with South West Trains tweeting that the lines were blocked due to an electricity supply problem.

Police said the fire was caused by an engineering fault.

Firefighters were called at 6.15pm. A spokesman for Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Because of the location and the number of people who would potentially be at the station we sent a large number of appliances. Two appliances from Dorchester attended, as well as one from Weymouth, one from Maiden Newton, one from Bere Regis, one from Bridport and several specialist officers."

In a statement on its website last night a spokesman for South West Trains said: "A problem has been identified with the equipment which delivers the electricity to the third rail, which powers the trains, near Dorchester. As a precaution, the power to these rails has been disconnected, and engineering staff are en route to the site.

"We are sorry for any disruption you experience."

A South West Trains spokesman later said: "Passengers were taken off the 1803 Weymouth to Waterloo service at Dorchester South station this evening after reports of electrical arcing underneath the train.

"Emergency services were called as a precaution, but were not required.

"There was no fire, although the incident did result in flashes, smoke and a bang, as well as cosmetic damage to the train.

"Replacement transport was provided for passengers to get them to their destination. We are sorry for the disruption caused to their journeys."
