PLANS are taking shape for another bumper Christmas Cracker Night in Dorchester.

The annual festive celebration is taking place on the evening of Thursday, December 8 and, with a Paralympic hero lined up to switch on the town's Christmas lights and plenty of entertainment in store, it promises to be a cracking event.

Local shops will be supporting the event and getting into the spirit as they stay open late.

There will be family entertainment and music from 6pm, with the big switch on by local Paralympian Paul Blake at 6.30pm.

Organisers are also promising a few surprises to keep revellers on their toes.

President of Dorchester Chamber for Business, Steve Bulley, is very much looking forward to the Chamber’s annual event.

He said: "When times are not as easy as they might be, we all need something to lift our spirits.

"The lights will be shining above the streets, Christmas music will fill the air, and laughter, the best medicine of all, will be in plentiful supply."

It will also be the third year for the Corn Exchange craft fair, which will take place from 4pm to 8pm, offering an eclectic mix of stalls with a chance to pick up some unique Christmas presents.

The Anonymous Travelling Market will be setting up again on South Street providing festive food, drink and more from 5pm with stalls from an array of specialist makers and producers from across the West Country.

After the lights are turned on, the Rock Choir lead by the Dorset leader Stacey Hobday will perform in Holy Trinity Church from 6.45pm, treating the crowds to Christmas songs and their usual pop, rock and chart repertoire.

There will also be the chance for youngsters to have their photos taken with a range of characters including the Snow Sisters and Snowman and the swashbuckling Pirate Captain.

Car parks in the town will be free from 4pm and road closures will be in place in the town centre from 4.45pm.

This year’s event main sponsor is Kingston Maurward.

A plea has gone out for volunteers to help ensure Dorchester's popular Christmas Cracker event runs smoothly.

The Cracker organising committee is keen to hear from anyone who would like to help deliver leaflets around the town and surrounding areas before the event or who would like to marshall on the night,

Volunteers will not be required for the whole night, with shifts available between 4pm and 8pm.

Marshalls will be stationed at strategic points around Dorchester to provide information and ensure directions are followed regarding road closures and signage.
