A LONG-awaited bridge connecting a supermarket to Wimborne town centre has been lifted into place - after a delay of almost six years.

The bridge, which will link Crown Mead with Waitrose, is due to open to the public next week when further work on landscaping has been completed.

Its construction was a condition of the supermarket's planning permission.

The Daily Echo reported in April 2011 that plans for a footbridge were made a condition for the approval of the supermarket.

Two years later, it was reported that Waitrose had to pay £180,000 to East Dorset District Council to be used ‘for the benefit of the town’.

Delays have been caused by legal issues, but council members hope that finally the bridge may lead to increased footfall in the town.

Officers at East Dorset District Council announced in August this year that construction of the bridge was due to begin in September, with the walkway officially opening in mid-November.

The bridge will cross the River Allen from Crown Mead outside W H Smith to land on the grass area next to Waitrose. It will include steps down to the land on the Waitrose side as well as a ramp for disabled access and pushchairs.

During the summer, district councillor Ray Bryan, portfolio holder for performance, admitted that the bridge had faced "some delays" due to legal arrangements, as well as restrictions as to when the work could be carried out.

Cllr Mike Dyer, portfolio holder for economy, said the bridge has won support from businesses in the town, as well as the business improvement district team.

"We look forward to increased prosperity in the town centre as a result," he said.

The contract for the construction of the bridge was awarded to Avon Construction Ltd and installation is on schedule.
