A BIKER was left fighting for life after a crash in Weymouth.

Police say a taxi was in collision with a motorbike, and the motorbike then hit a van.

It happened at the junction of Carlton Road North and Alexandra Road, near the Weatherbury pub at around 3.30pm on Saturday.

The incident involved a taxi, a grey Toyota Avensis, being driven by a female driver and a 34-year-old male motorcyclist, who was on a black Honda motorcycle.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

The motorcycle was in collision with the car and then subsequently hit a grey van.

Both police and paramedics confirmed that the biker is in a life-threatening condition.

He suffered life-threatening head and chest injuries.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “Initially an ambulance crew that was nearby on another call assisted the patient while another ambulance and Paramedic Officer arrived.

“A male in his 30s was taken to DCH with potentially life-threatening head and chest injuries.”

It was reported that the air ambulance was called to assist but it is not believed to have been needed.

One eyewitness reported seeing a man being taken away in a land ambulance.

The whole area was cordoned off while police investigated the accident.

Police had left the scene by around 7.30pm.

The road was closed to motorists at the Weatherbury pub with access also restricted to all members of the public around the scene.

There were more than five police vehicles in attendance and crime scene investigators on the scene for some time.

Police said that the female driver is currently assisting them with their enquiries at this time. They are appealing for witnesses to come forward and help to form a picture of what happened.

Investigators were seen using lights to investigate both the taxi and the motorbike and the scene around the accident.

Police had reported that the area around Cranford Avenue was going to be closed off for the air ambulance to land but the area remained open.

A police spokesman said: “A grey Toyota Avensis car collided with a black Honda motorcycle, which then came into contact with a grey Ford Transit van. The exact circumstances are still being investigated.

“The man riding the motorcycle was taken by ambulance to Dorset County Hospital and he is believed to have life-threatening injuries.

“Specially trained officers are supporting his family.

“If anyone was in the area at the time, or saw vehicles matching these descriptions shortly before the collision, please contact Dorset Police.”

One resident reported that the biker was in a “pretty bad way” with paramedics attending to him.
