IT’S the most wonderful time of the year.

And hundreds of people turned out on Portland for some festive fun.

The island’s annual Easton Promise returned on Friday night, featuring carol singing, donkey rides, late night shopping and, of course, Father Christmas.

The event’s aim was to promote Easton while raising vital funds for Julia’s House children’s hospice.

Mayor of Portland, Sandy West, said the event brought the community together.

“It’s been absolutely fantastic,” she said. “Everyone has worked so hard to put this together and it’s been a real family event.

“It’s Portland Town Council’s first year putting this together and it’s turned out fantastic.

“The library and shops around the square are open until late and it’s a commercial hub, bringing everyone together on the island for an evening of fundraising.

“The gardens look beautiful and it was fabulous to hear the children singing. There’s a real community feel on Portland and everyone is enjoying it.

“There are about 13,000 people on Portland, so to do this is fantastic. A wonderful night.”

Cllr David Symes, chairman of the events committee, added: “It’s been excellent and it’s the first time we’ve done it. I’ve thought to myself, will it all come together? But it really has and I’ve heard lots of positive comments.

“Everyone’s had a good time – the Christmas carols were particularly good and it’s been nice to see young people getting in to the Christmas spirit. It’s been brilliant.”

As well as performance from Julia’s House, the IPACA choir and Island Voices, there was a baking competition, treasure hunt and display from the majorettes.

Even Portland Fire Brigade stopped by.

Portland town crier, Stuart Cave, said: “This is the fifth time I’ve been involved in the event. It’s been a great way to get people out and involved in the community and for a good cause. It’s nice to see the local shops taking part.

“I’m happy with how it’s turned out. The weather has been kind to us, which is even better, and lots of people have turned out. I’ve seen lots of families, which is nice. “
