PLANS have been submitted for eight homes at a former factory site in Dorchester.

A developer has applied for planning permission to demolish a former flax factory on St Georges Road and build homes on the site.

The development proposed will include two one-bedroom flats, three two-bedroom houses and three three-bedroom houses.

There will be two parking spaces for each of the houses on the site and one for each of the flats.

A design and access statement submitted with the plans adds: "A new access and footpath will be constructed as well as a public amenity space to

make the development a pleasant place to live.

"The proposal will involve the demolition of the former flax factory that currently dominates the site.

"The mobile park homes, show lorries, caravans and vans currently used by an extended family of travelling show people will be relocated."

The application site is located on the corner between St Georges Road and Fenway Close, less than one mile from Dorchester town centre.

The design and access statement says that the site has been owned by the Herberts, a family of travelling show people, for nearly 90 years and is used for long term storage of equipment but does also have some permanent caravans and mobile park homes.

It states that the site is "dominated" by the former flax factory, which will be demolished to make way for the eight homes.

The proposal also includes a public amenity space, to the east which is 10m wide and will provide a space for children to play in as well as acting as a "buffer zone" to the nearby sewerage treatment plant.

The existing access on the corner of the site will be removed and a new access off of St. Georges Road will be created.
