A VALUABLE service supporting adults with learning disabilities or additional needs to develop their independence is celebrating a milestone year.

Muntsy's was set up in 2007 by Sue Munts and Hazel Goddard. It was the first independent day service in the area and has steadily grown running community groups designed to meet the needs and aspirations of its members.

There are group in Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester and this year marks the day service's 10 year anniversary.

Activities are run and supported by a team of committed and dedicated professionals. The core team come from an educational setting and have many years of experience in teaching and learning in the special educational needs field.

Muntsy's also work in partnership with local specialist teams, parent's, carers, work place providers, artists, musicians and other professionals.

Talking about how it all first started, Sue said: "Hazel and I originally worked together at Weymouth College with adults with learning disabilities. In 2006 the government stopped funding full-time courses, leaving our students in a vulnerable position.

"We always wanted to start something up that was independent from the college, so we just took the plunge and went for it. And here we are celebrating 10 years - it's incredible.

"Initially we organised and held groups in churches in Weymouth and Dorchester - who kindly allowed us to do it for free. And from that we continued to grow.

"One of our most popular groups is the performing arts group. We have a lot of creative people with us who love to get on that stage. And within that group they are learning to sing and dance, learning communication skills and how to work together on a project.

"We also have a Blue Fish team who work at the Blue Fish Café in Chiswell.

"They all have their responsibilities like any other person. It is probably one of the most valuable things we do, giving people the opportunity to work. They are proud to put on their uniform and go to work.

"Everything is carefully designed so each person is working towards their targets. It's all about allowing them to become more independent."

Looking to the future, Hazel added: "We will continue to grow with what we do. As the people who come here become older their ideas for activities may change and we will change with it to meet their needs."
