A CHARITY supporting older people is aiming to spread some winter warmth.

The Royal Voluntary Society says that staying warm and well during the cold winter months is "essential" for the older generation.

While it can be tempting to stay wrapped up at home, the charity says it is important to get out and about and has a range of services across Dorset, supported by funds from the People's Postcode Lottery.

A spokesman for the Royal Voluntary Service said: "Our service users tell us how vulnerable winter makes them feel.

"Fears about having a fall, running out of essentials or not being able to stay warm can make it an anxious time.

"Checking weather forecasts and local news regularly for severe weather warnings is a good way prepare for any cold snaps, ice or snow.

"Taking advantage of milder weather to stock up on basic groceries, essential household goods and medical prescriptions is also a good idea and avoids having to head out to the shops if the weather turns.

"Royal Voluntary Service volunteers provide help with shopping and household tasks through Good Neighbours services in Dorset, Poole and Bournemouth."

The Royal Voluntary Service says that when a cold snap hits leaving the house may not be advisable, due to the increased risk for those over 65 of having a fall, but says otherwise helping older people stay sociable is one of its top priorities during the winter.

The charity spokesman said: "Staying in touch is good for health, particularly in helping prevent isolation and loneliness.

"Whether it’s a chat on the phone with a family member, a natter with a neighbour over a cup of tea or meeting friends at a local lunch club, it’s good to talk.

"Royal Voluntary Service volunteers run a host of local social groups for older people including a craft club in Dorchester, a lunch club in Sherborne and Lychett Matravers, Tea and Chat in Charmouth and a hearing club in Bridport.

"Volunteer drivers also provide community transport when walking or public transport is not an option."

Other tips include keeping warm, drinking hot drinks, eating well, being physically active and staying hydrated.
