ELECTRICITY has been restored to homes and businesses after a power cut.

The fault affected more than 1,200 properties in parts of Weymouth and Chickerell this afternoon.

Businesses on the Granby Industrial Esate were among those hit.

Street lights and traffic signals were also out.

The blackout lasted up to an hour and a half, with customers back on by 6pm.

Southern Electric said about 4.30pm that an engineer was en route and they should be conducting repairs by 5pm.

The power cut affected traffic lights on the Granby Industrial Estate.

Travel Dorset tweeted: "Traffic lights are not working in the Granby and Lanehouse areas due to an area power failure."

A total of 1,236 properties were without power in the DT4 postcode area including Southill and the Granby Industrial Estate.

A spokesman for SSE said earlier the problem should be fixed by 6.30pm although some customers may be back online before then.
