THE next generation of movie animators could come from Weymouth, after a group of year six pupils got to make their own film.

The up and coming film makers from St Andrew’s School were given the chance to create an animation to the song Circle from a Square.

The point of the film was to show children around the world that everyone is different, but shouldn’t be treated differently.

Pupils saw the film for the first time last month at a premiere in the school hall.

More than 100 parents attended the premiere and enjoyed refreshments and popcorn.

Afterwards, the St Andrews’ Oscars were held where awards were given out to particular children for their efforts.

Parents of the 10 and 11-year-olds were “totally amazed” at the level of work they had produced.

Children managed to choreograph their own dances which were developed into film.

Pupils also decided to base most of the film on PSHE and used teddies to express their feelings.

The characters were drawn then animated to the song.

The pupils said they would like to make a film all over again and said it was a “great experience”.

Pupils were helped by staff from ScreenPLAY, who came in to the school and helped show them how to create, make and edit the animation.

The school said the children “really benefited” from the opportunity and were amazed with their achievements of creating and participating in their own animation.

The school wanted to thank ScreenPLAY for helping make the animation.

ScreenPLAY is a social enterprise which evolved out of a series of film projects with young people in 2012.

It believes in empowering people through arts activity and gives young people a voice through film.

It allows young people to become more active partners in their education and gives them digital skills they may need in later life.

ScreenPLAY works across Dorset and other projects include making seafront banners and other creative work with different digital technologies.

The projects look to create a sense of place in which those taking part become co-creators of the work. To watch the animation that the pupils made go to www.standrewswey.co.uk/website For more on the work that ScreenPLAY do go to www.screen-play.co.uk/
