A CENTURY on from humble beginnings, a military organisation is blooming in Weymouth.

The South Dorset Wrens Association has arranged a floral display in Greenhill Gardens this summer as the group prepares to mark its 100th anniversary.

The South Dorset branch – known originally as Weymouth and District – was formed in 1950 but nationally the organisation has roots reaching back to 1917 and this year is set to be one of celebration.

Christine Baker, one of the members, said all branches have been asked to do something to mark the occasion.

The floral display will be in full bloom in summer, and will be accompanied by a plaque, which Mrs Baker hopes will spark interest in the group.

She added: “It is a big deal for us and the ladies of the Wrens here in Weymouth and Portland wanted to do something special. All the different branches around the country have been asked to do something and this is something that we thought will be lovely to do. So many people will be able to see it.

“In the summer, when it’s in full bloom, it will look fabulous.”

It may have been going for 100 years, but the group is as strong as ever, Mrs Baker added.

“We have got a good group here in Weymouth. We have some good speakers at our meetings at the Rembrandt Hotel on Dorchester Road and there are members of all ages. There are some members who are in their 90s. The older ones have such history and they are real characters.”

The South Dorset branch celebrated its 65th anniversary in 2015 and the Dorset Echo interviewed founding member Monica Tarrier, who shared her memories of wartime service.

Cllr Andy Blackwood, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s Briefholder for Community Facilities, said: “We’ve been recognising the anniversaries of local charities and organisations in our Greenhill Gardens for many decades.

“We’re delighted to acknowledge the Women’s Royal Navy Service by getting creative with our floral bedding to produce something truly fitting for such a significant anniversary.”
