FIRE crews were called to Marks & Spencer in Weymouth following reports of the smell of smoke.
Firefighters were called just after 2.20pm today to the store on St Mary Street.
There are currently three crews in attendance at the store from Weymouth, Dorchester and Portland.
A spokesman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "It looks as though crews from Dorchester and Portland will be coming away shortly.
"The lift at the store was already broken and an engineer was working on it when they thought they could smell smoke.
"Crews are still on site at the moment ensuring the engineer is okay and that thorough checks are made."
A small fire was discovered to be out on the arrival of fire crews, who assisted the lift engineer to safety by winding the lift down.
