VANDALS have taken to the streets in Weymouth to cause damage to 26 cars in what is being described as a 'mindless' act by Dorset Police.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after vandals caused damage to 26 cars parked in Victoria Street and Grange Road over the weekend.

Police believe it was sometime between 7.30pm on Friday night and 8.30am Saturday morning in the town centre that cars of residents were targeted.

Residents woke on Saturday morning to discover that 10 vehicles had sustained damaged wing mirrors or wiper blades, while a further 16 were tampered with. In these cases wing mirrors were moved or bent back but no permanent damage was caused.  Police Sergeant Mark Dent, of Weymouth police, said: "This mindless vandalism has caused a great deal of upset and inconvenience to residents and I would urge anyone who knows who was responsible to please contact Dorset Police.

“I would also ask anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area between the relevant times to please come forward.

“Officers from the local neighbourhood policing team will be carrying out patrols in the area to offer reassurance to residents.”

One resident who did not wish to be named said she had her car wing mirror bent back and speculated that it was 'just kids messing around'.

Another resident said: "I saw a police car this morning but I didn't hear anything which is unusual because the dogs would always bark."

Anyone who may have any information is being asked to come forward and speak to Dorset Police.

One resident expressed her concern, saying: "I didn't hear anything but I saw the cars this morning when a neighbour told me about it.

"It's worrying to think of this happening at night when we're all in bed. What's the point of it?"
