A WOMAN from Burnham-on-Sea is set to take on the iconic London Marathon in memory of her dad.

Charlotte Campbell will tackle the world-famous marathon course this year to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK after her dad, Malcolm Troy, died from the disease in 2015.

Mr Troy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in May 2015, and died in December after a short and brutal battle with the disease.

Charlotte Campbell from Burnham-on-Sea is set to run the London Marathon in April to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK, in memory of her father Malcolm Troy, who died of the disease at the end of 2015.

Mrs Campbell decided to run the marathon in memory of her dad, who was a keen runner himself.

She said: “When we found out that my Dad had pancreatic cancer, it was devastating for our family.

“My Dad was only 59 and a very fit man.

“He ran the London Marathon twice, ran multiple half marathons, climbed Everest, climbed Snowdon, regularly did the Burnham triathlon and more.

“So, I am delighted to have this incredible opportunity to follow in his footsteps, while also raising raise money to fund vital research to help fight this cruel and savage disease, which steals so many lives and breaks so many hearts each year.”

Around 1,600 people each day across the world are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which is one of the most aggressive cancers. Despite advancements in treating other major cancers, there is still no early detection method for pancreatic cancer, and it is the only major cancer with a five-year survival rate in the single digits. Each day, 985 people die due to the disease.

Pancreatic Cancer UK works with people and families affected by the disease, and also invests in research to fight the cancer, and lobbies for greater recognition.

Mrs Campbell added: “Running doesn’t come particularly naturally to me – I’ve only done one half marathon and this will be my first full marathon attempt. I know my Dad would be so pleased that I’m even attempting to do the marathon, so I am determined to do him proud!

“I have raised more than £2,000 so far for Pancreatic Cancer UK and am well on my way to reaching my £2,500 target. My husband Rich will be coming with me on the day to support me and I’m sure my family will be keeping an eye out on the TV at home.”
