POLICE inquiries into the tragic death of five-year-old Alexys Brown have concluded without anyone being charged, a coroner heard.

Little Alexys died of head and neck injuries after becoming trapped between a lift and a ceiling at her Weymouth home in 2015.

A pre-inquest review held today in Bournemouth heard that Dorset Police officers had carried out a detailed investigation and referred the case to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

But the CPS decided not to bring any proceedings and the police inquiry ended.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is still under way and officers from the organisation plan to “invite people for interview under caution before the summer.”

Representatives from the police and the HSE attended the inquest, as did those from The Aster Group Limited – the landlords who arranged for the installation of the lift – and Orona Limited, who were responsible for servicing the equipment.

Dorset coroner Rachael Griffin said she will not fix a date for the full inquest until the HSE investigation has concluded and adjourned to another pre-inquest review on June 28. She said a jury will be called for the full inquest.

Alexys, known as Lexi, was the youngest of three children of Lorraine and Matthew Brown. The family lived at Emmadale Close, where the tragedy occurred on August 13 2015.

At the opening of the inquest, coroner’s officer Andy Lord said: “Alexys was ascending a platform lift to go up to the first floor of the property when she became trapped between part of the lift and the ground floor ceiling of the property.

“She was freed by emergency services but was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Alexys’ death prompted an outpouring of grief in the community and flowers and teddies were left outside her home. A fund raising appeal was also launched which has raised thousands of pounds for the family.
