WIMBORNE Town coach Shane Traynor hailed the contribution of "fantastic" Matt Oldring after the debutant defender helped Magpies stun promotion-chasing Tiverton Town 1-0.

Toby Holmes scored the decisive goal at Cuthbury as Matty Holmes's team moved up to 10th in Southern League South & West.

And Traynor revealed 24-year-old Oldring's "know-how" had been vital to the successful implementation of a change in formation which shut out the third-placed visitors.

He told the Daily Echo: "We changed to a 3-5-2 system, because we wanted to match Tiverton man for man.

"We thought that bringing Matty into the side gave us a great opportunity to play like that – and the game plan worked.

"He was fantastic and he brings a wealth of experience. He was talking all the time and he just has the bit of know-how which we haven’t had all season.

"We have been missing Scott Arnold for so long, so it was nice to have somebody to come in and dictate the game.

"Matty reads the game so well and the younger lads will learn so much from playing alongside him."

Former Cherries youngster Oldring, who signed from Southern Premier Dorchester last week, directed two efforts off target – one with his head, one from distance – during the opening half an hour.

Matt Neale then had a shot blocked, before Toby Holmes capitalised on a 43rd-minute error by visiting captain Steve Kingdon to finish expertly past goalkeeper Joe Perry.

Perry saved from the striker on 76 minutes and, shortly after, Jack Lovell headed over from substitute Luke Holmes's free-kick.

Tiverton struck the woodwork in their late pursuit of an equaliser, while Magpies were also grateful to see Owen Howe sky a shot from the right of the area with two minutes to play.

The victory was Magpies' third of a productive March and sees them on course to better their highest league finish of 12th – with four of their remaining five fixtures against teams in the bottom half of the table.

"We did not have any specific targets and sitting in 10th position is really positive, especially with the young side we have," said Traynor.

"Matty told the board it would be a patient game with us and we would develop a style of football people would enjoy and want to come and watch.

"All the players are taking on board the philosophy Matty has brought in and it is them who deserve all the credit, they have been fantastic.

"We would love to finish in the top 10 and we will do everything we can to stay in that position."
