The roar of hundreds of motorbikes could be heard as fundraisers headed along the coast in the sunshine.

More than 300 bikers revved up their engines for a good cause yesterday.

The bikers took to the road and headed from Chickerell to Exmouth, via West Bay, in aid of charity Action on Addiction.

The event, in its third year, raised funds for the charity’s Clouds House, a treatment centre that supports people affected by addiction.

Organiser John Bramble, from Chickerell, launched the event in memory of his son Craig, who died due to solvent abuse in 2001.

Speaking before the event, John said: “No matter how small the donation, every single penny helps someone with this silent illness get into Clouds House and hopefully on to recovery and a new life without addiction.

“Thanks to everyone for their continual support in this ride, their support means so much to myself and my family.”

The riders set off from South Coast Motorcycles, on the Granby Industrial Estate, on Sunday morning. They headed to West Bay via the coast road and, after a 40 minute break, continued to Queens Drive in Exmouth.

Bikers paid £5 to take part and everyone was encouraged to join in; the ride was learner friendly and trikes and scooters were also welcome.

Last year, more than £3,300 was raised and it is believed this year’s event well-exceeded that amount. John alone raised more than £500.

The event was supported by Snack Shack and Helmet City in West Bay, as well as Stika and Trade Windows and Doors. Snack Shack donated Sunday’s takings to the cause.

Nigel Lewis of bikers group Bikers for Action, the main group supporting the event, said the ride was “easily the biggest one.”

“The biking community sticks together,” he said. “The first year we did it, the weather was awful and there was fog and everything – 200 people still turned up, it was amazing.

It’s gone from strength to strength and it’s all for a brilliant, brilliant cause. It’s so worthwhile.”
