HERE'S a further nautical memory from former Weymouth harbour master Peter Tambling.

He has shared this photo of the last vessel to discharge outside the Royal Dorset Yacht Club in Weymouth in 1989.

The German coaster Eros was a regular sight discharging fertilisers in our harbour on all general cargo berths.

Peter said: "However this was to be her final call and I invited her master to come into the RDYC as a token of my thanks.

"He stood at the Bar and said that he was going on leave as soon as he reached Bremerhaven, but would it be possible for finding a brace of pheasants to give to his wife? The well known Mr Victor Cooke heard the request and disappeared down the stairs. Shortly afterwards we heard loud noises from a pair of flat feet climbing the stairs.

"Suddenly a hand shot round the door frame displaying a brace hanging from a little finger! Hans looked round absolutely astonished as Vic brought his gifts to stand alongside the German Captain as he exclaimed "Hans - Here is your prize"

"A shocked Hans then stated that he had taken part in no competition! The verbal exclamations continued for some time until finally Vic said 'Hans --This is your prize for coming second in the War' Everybody roared with laughter and peace with harmony resumed.

"What a departure Eros was given as his daughter serving a mate took the vessel out to sea with Pilot Bob Runyeard in fits of laughter!

"Those were happy days in a thriving port of Weymouth when I was the port manager and harbour master."
