DORSET County Hospital’s Cancer Appeal has leaped closer to its target after receiving a huge donation from a Dorchester charity.

The hospital was presented with £100,000 cheque from Dorset Health Trust.

DCH is raising money to hit its £1.75m target by March 2019. It hit its £1m mark at the start of April.

The appeal, supported by the Dorset Echo, is funding a new outpatients’ department for all cancer patients at Dorset County Hospital, which will be built on top of the new Radiotherapy unit on the Hospital site on Bridport Road.

Dorset Health Trust have backed major projects at Dorset County Hospital for several years, including a grant of £600,000 for a new CT scanner, £28,000 for a mobile ultrasound machine and £150,000 for digital mammography equipment.

They also helped to fund the hospital’s existing Fortuneswell Chemotherapy Unit.

Lavinia Barbour, Chair of Dorset Health Trust said, “We were delighted to be able to support the Cancer Appeal as the new facilities being provided at Dorset County Hospital will benefit thousands of cancer patients and their families every year.”

The Cancer Appeal is part of a major project bringing radiotherapy services to Dorchester for the first time.

Dorset County Hospital Charity’s Head of Fundraising, Simon Pearson said, “Dorset Health Trust have been one of our most consistent supporters and have made a huge difference to patients at the hospital over the years. We thank them for their generous support for this important project.”

Other major donors include the Fortuneswell Cancer Trust, the Lawrence Werth Trust, Garfield Weston Foundation, Ducks and Drakes Cancer Trust and the Kay Kendall Leukaemia Fund.

A message from lead cancer nurse Abi Orchard, on the JustGiving fundraising page for the appeal, says: "This appeal will help us provide world-class cancer services in Dorchester.

"The new facilities will be life-changing, particularly for people who live a long way from radiotherapy services in Poole. We want to be the best we can possibly be.”

The Walk for Wards event, taking place on Weymouth seafront on Sunday, July 2, will be a major fundraiser for the project,
