The BIG Dorset Outdoor Weekend, featuring a huge array of adventure-filled activities, starts tomorrow.

The weekend has been put together by Creative Solutions on behalf of Weymouth BID, which has funded this unique chance for people to get a taste of the outdoor activities available in the area.

There are more than 25 outdoor activity and adventure events in south Dorset, with most of them in Weymouth and Portland. Residents and visitors can take part in nature walks, runs, cycle rides and a host of watersports, including windsurfing and sailing.

Roy Griffiths, organiser for the event, said: “There is something for everyone, from novices to experts.”

Among the activities, the Official Test Centre on Portland is running its Harbour Dash windsurfing race tomorrow at 3pm.

The centre is also putting on windsurfing and paddleboard taster sessions on Saturday and Sunday, from 10am to 5.30pm.

There will be a series of sailing taster sessions at the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

Walks for the weekend include a reserve walk starting at the RSPB’s visitor’s centre on Radipole Park Drive tomorrow at 2pm, as well as a Portland walk on Sunday. This will start at the car park just west of the Heights Hotel from 10am.

Weymouth BID hopes that by putting a spotlight on activities which run outside the summer season, Weymouth and Portland can have more visitors coming to the area throughout the year.

Mr Griffiths said: “We are hoping this is the start of an annual event.”
