A SEA of pink t-shirts, tutus and trainers flocked to this year’s Race for Life to raise money for a worthy cause.

The 5k run, organised by Cancer Research UK, was a scenic trip around the picturesque Kingston Maurward grounds in Dorchester.

700 runners young and old smiled as they finished the course on Sunday, running for friends, loved ones, or just to support the charity.

Along the route, choirs sang to spur on the runners, and there was a brass band playing near Kingston Maurward house.

Michelle Waldock ran with her daughter Millie and friend Caroline Browne. It is the 11th year running that Caroline and Michelle have taken part in the Race for Life.

Michelle said: "On the first year we ran, I was just starting radiotherapy for breast cancer. That first year was very emotional.

"And now here I am, doing it for the eleventh time."

Caroline said: "I'm racing for my dad. We do it every year. Even when I was pregnant we still walked round.

"It was really lovely that there choirs all the way round. We liked the run."

Julie Caswell and Valerie Fisher ran the whole race together after both coming alone.

Valerie said: "We only met today, but we ran the whole thing together. I'm doing this for my sister who has cancer at the moment."

Julie said: "It's lovely, it was a nice course and a really lovely day. I'm doing it for several of my relatives."

Gill McDonald and Siân Merriott were proud of their time after walking the race due to injury.

Siân said: "We walked most of it as I had a knee operation six months ago."

Gill said: "We did it in about 50 minutes. We were aiming for under an hour so we're impressed with that."

Brenda Scott, Race for Life event manager, said said: “It was an amazing day, people said that hearing the choirs motivated them.

"We hope to have raised £44,000 this year, which is amazing. That will go towards us beating cancer and that's what really matters.

"It's all about coming together as a community."
