Crowds flocked to Weymouth over the weekend to enjoy some family fun – while raising thousands of pounds for local causes.

Fayre in the Square proved a huge success as thousands of people headed to Hope Square on yesterday and today to soak up the bank holiday atmosphere and enjoy live music, entertainment and activities.

The event, in its fourth year, is organised by the Rotary Club of Weymouth and aims to make a difference in the community by raises thousands of pounds for local causes.

Last year, more than £16,000 was raised for good causes and organisers are hoping they have done even better this year.

There were lots of smiling faces, said organising committee member, Dennis Corbett.

“It’s been absolutely heaving. We’ve had thousands of people down here and we’re on course to match what we’ve raised in past years.

“We’re hoping the weather keeps up today and this special little climate we have in Weymouth protects us.”

Over the weekend, visitors and locals were treated to live music from a variety of local acts who performed free of charge.

Stalls, including cider tents, led along the harbourside to the square, selling a range of local produce, and food and drink was available.
Prizes were up for grabs, one of which was a holiday, and there was plenty to keep children entertained.

Dennis said: “All the stallholders have already said they want to come back and do it again next year. It’s been a cracking weekend. We’re very pleased with it.”

The event was free to attend but donations were encouraged.

Tristan Winfield visited with children Freya, eight, Finn, seven, and Elsie, 10.

He said: "It's been very good. There's been lots to see and the children have enjoyed it. There's been a good atmosphere."

Freya said "I liked the rides - the bungee jump was my favourite."

Chairman of the Rotary Club’s Fayre in the Square committee, Rob Sedgbee, said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to the organising committee and volunteers, to the bands, the businesses and to the Echo for their support.

"I'm happy with the turnout. People's generosity is always bountiful. We're looking forward to a big handover to local causes."

The event finishes at 6pm today.
