A FLORAL display marking a group's 100th anniversary is in full bloom.

Visitors to Greenhill Gardens can't help but notice the vibrant design, which marks 100 years since the formation of the Wrens.

It has been arranged by South Dorset Wrens Association, with assistance from Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, who say they are 'really impressed' with how it has turned out.

The South Dorset branch - known originally as Weymouth and District - was formed in 1950 but nationally the organisation has roots reaching back to 1917 and this year is set to be one of celebration.

All of the branches were asked to do something to mark the occasion.

Christine Baker, one of the members, said: "I was really impressed with how it looked. The local parks department have done a wonderful job."

The group is still going strong, and has members of all ages, who attend regular meetings at the Rembrandt Hotel on Dorchester Road.

Christine said she hoped the floral display will spark interest in the Wrens, as people walking along the seafront stop by to admire it.

Speaking earlier this year, when work on the display began, Cllr Andy Blackwood, spokesman for community facilities said the display is 'truly fitting'.

He added: “We’re delighted to acknowledge the Women’s Royal Navy Service by getting creative with our floral bedding to produce something truly fitting for such a significant anniversary.”

Founded in 1917, there were 7,000 Wrens by 1919, including cooks and stewards, despatch riders, sail makers and those in intelligence.

Revived in 1939 at the outbreak of the Second World War, 3,000 women were recruited with new roles such as radio operators, meteorologists, bomb range markers, as well as sea-going roles of cypher officers, coders and boat’s crew Wrens.
By 1944, when membership of the group hit its peak, 74,000 women were Wrens.

There will be an official event later in the summer to acknowledge the display. Christine said any local ex-Wrens who would like to attend to commemorate the anniversary are 'most welcome'.

It takes place on July 21 at 2pm and local dignitaries and local groups have also been invited.
