A two-car crash caused large tailbacks on Portland this afternoon.

A total of six people had to be examined by paramedics following a crash between a silver Renault Scenic and a silver Peugeot 206 on New Road shortly after 3.30pm.

Both cars were registered to women from Portland and had been carrying four children as passengers.

The South Western Ambulance Service sent a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance and paramedic officer to the scene.

An ambulance spokesman said: “On arrival, all the occupants were out of their cars and after being assessed all were deemed to have either very minor or no injuries and were all discharged on scene.”

A spokesman for Dorset Police also said there were reports of a diesel spillage which completely blocked the road.

Officers assisted to re-direct traffic as long delays were reports coming on and off the island.

The road was cleared and traffic returned to normal at around 5.45pm.
