From a coconut shy to crazy golf to a bouncy castle disco, a summer fair in Crossways went above and beyond to draw in the crowds.

The first of hopefully many summer fairs was organised at Crossways Youth and Community Centre yesterday in efforts to keep the building running.

This is the first major event that has been organised since the centre took over from Dorset County Council and became a registered charity.

Karan Harris oversees fundraising for Crossways Youth and Community Centre, and helped organise its first ever summer fair.

She said: "It's so nice to see the community of Crossways come together to support this. So many people have turned up and it's lovely to see people mingling and just having fun.

"Chairman of the parish council, Andrew Brewer, is even doing a Punch and Judy show for us.

"We also have the Scouts here, the WI and the Brownies.

"We are really keen to make our summer fair an annual event and make each year even bigger and better."

The day also saw performances from Rachel Scott and the Dorset Wrecks.

The summer fair was officially opened by Dave Cheffey, who has been a lifelong supporter of the Crossways Youth Club.

Unfortunately Mr Cheffey recently suffered a stroke and has had to take a slight step back from the club, but Karen was thrilled that he was able to come down for the event.

Mr Cheffey's daughter Laura, who is now the chairman of the charity, said: "We couldn't have done this without the help of Karan and her husband David. Everyone has worked really hard.

"But we can't keep this charity and club going without more support. We are really looking for more some youth leaders to come forward and volunteer some of their time.

"We also need help with running the back end of the charity, we need a secretary for one."

Karan added: "The more volunteers we can get the more we can spread the workload and the less pressure we will all be under.

"Even if you can't volunteer every week and can do just once a month, that would be fantastic."

The charity has organised a number of upcoming events such as a car boot trail, a quiz night and a pamper night.
