The countdown to this year’s Weymouth Carnival has well and truly begun.

The much-anticipated charity event is less than three weeks away and promises to be a ‘fantastic carnival.’

Chairman of Weymouth Carnival, Ryan Hope, admitted he is excited for the upcoming two-day event and explained that ‘it isn’t too late’ to get involved.

He said: “Preparation is coming on really well. This year is setting up to be a fantastic carnival, but it isn’t too late for people to get involved, we still need your support. Sponsorship deals are still available for businesses to purchase.

“We want to raise as much money as possible for charity but the amount we raise depends on the number of volunteers who come forward.”

The carnival has been held in Weymouth for decades and has become somewhat of a town tradition, with thousands of visitors attending every year to watch the carnival procession and the impressive air displays.

Mr Hope added: “It has become a town tradition and is important for the economic climate in Weymouth.

This year we are expecting more than 60,000 visitors over the two days. People are excited for the return of the Red Arrows and visitors can expect the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.”

The carnival begins on Tuesday, August 15. Visitors can expect a beach rugby competition, a sand sculpture competition and the return of the evening torchlight procession.

Chris Edwards, procession manager, admitted he is excited for the return of the torchlight procession.

He said: “It was an amazing sight last year and was very well attended. We are hoping to get more people involved this year. Torches will be available to buy for £5, and we will be selling glow sticks for the children.”

Wednesday, August 16 is the main day with the big procession from Weymouth Pavilion to Lodmoor car park and the Red Arrows.

Mr Edwards has called for more people to get involved in the procession.

He said: “We are always looking for more entries either marching or floats. If groups want to enter we need to see a copy of their insurance otherwise groups can come under our insurance, at a charge of £15 for walking entries and £30 for a vehicle/float.

“Hopefully it will be bigger than last year. We are kicking this year’s procession off with the motorbikes and low scooters who will drive along the route.”
