Take a step back in time and walk through the history of Dorchester.

A new and exciting app has been launched in the county town in efforts to showcase its vast amounts of history.

But don't worry, you won't be alone in your tour - town crier Alistair Chisholm will be with you every step of the way.

The town tour app was officially launched last week at the Roman Town House, one of 13 stops on the tour.

It is an initiative brought together by Real Town Tours and Dorchester BID.

Speaking about the app, Alistair said it was a big step in to the 21st century for Dorchester.

"We are in the 21st century and there are occasions when having a modern things, like this app, can be such a huge benefit to the town," he said.

"Dorchester is a wonderful place, I cant say it enough. There is just so much history here and we want everyone to know about it.

"I was delighted to be asked to take part in the app and do my bit for our town."

Dorset Echo:

Project director of Dorchester BID, Phil Gordon, was excited to see the launch of the app.

He said: "It is free to download, people just need to search for Real Town Tours and select the Dorchester tour.

"The first stop is Maumbury Rings and if you activate your locator feature Alistair's voice fires up and talks to you as you walk through the town.

"He will take you to some of the best historical and interesting parts of town with a few amusing stories along the way.

"We loved the idea of a town tour app but we wanted an audio to go with it, and who better than our town crier."

Wendy Riley, editorial director Real Town Tours, added: "Working with the Dorchester BID team has highlighted the role high quality content plays in conveying the story of a town on our app.

"The Dorchester Real Town Tour was the first time we have engaged the services of a professional voice actor on every stop. It's added great depth to the experience and we're sure visitors will enjoy the extra dimension it brings to the Dorset tour."
