A museum took families back to the Jurassic Period during its latest event.

Visitors young and old flocked to Portland Museum yesterday for the museum's annual Dino Day.

The event offered a variety of dinosaur inspired activities for visitors to get involved with, including making dinosaurs out of vegetables, making collage ammonites and decorating dinosaur shaped biscuits with icing.

The museum’s latest fossil was also exhibited for visitors to see.

According to Portland Museum’s manager Lisa Gravett, this year’s Dino Day was more popular than ever.

She said: “It has been absolutely brilliant we are delighted with the amount of people who have come, it has been very busy.

“We had one hundred and fifty dinosaur shaped biscuits and they have all gone, so it must be more than one hundred and fifty people. The event has attracted all ages.

“It takes a lot of organisation and preparation and I was helped by a lot of volunteers, without them we wouldn’t be able to run events like this.”

Charlotte Hall, mother of six-year-old twins Charlie and Emily, said her children loved the event and she was happy to help support the museum.

She said: “Charlie likes dinosaurs. He made some dinosaurs out of fruit and vegetables. We like coming here it and it helps the museum. They have learned about ammonites and Charlie looked through a magnifying glass, he thought he saw another dinosaur. Thankfully the weather was nice.”

Carly Murray, a mother from Portland said: "We come along every year, it's great fun for the children and for me. They go off and do the activities while I enjoy a cup of tea and some cake. My children really loved making dinosaur heads this year. I think it is really good for the community."

Hayley Ellis and Felicity Harrington, who attended this year’s Dino Day also praised the amount of activities organised for the children.

Hayley said: “They have done lots, they have made a collage ammonite, they painted a fridge magnet and they even decorated dinosaur shaped cookies."

Felicity added: "We have had a great day; my little boy is a big fan of dinosaurs.”

All the money raised from this year’s Dino Day will be donated to Portland Museum Charity Trust to help support the museum in the future.
