A motorist driving with her grandchildren was left shaken after a collision with another car shattered her window and left them 'smothered with glass'.

Patricia West, 85, was staying in Weymouth with son Jason for her grandson’s birthday when the collision happened on Radipole Park Drive.

Mrs West, from Bath, said she was driving along the road when the car struck another vehicle driving in the opposite direction, knocking the wing mirror into the driver's window and completely shattering the glass.

The driver of the other car reportedly did not stop following the incident.

Mrs West said: "I was driving slowly along Radipole Park Drive having taken my grandsons to the park, when about half way up the road a car hit my wing mirror at such speed.

“My grandchildren were smothered with bits of glass and the car just continued into the distance.

“Two other drivers, one behind me and one on the other side of the road, stopped and helped. The lady behind took me and the boys home and took my son to pick the car up. I felt angry after the shock had left me.

“My oldest grandchild Victor said he had seen the car coming and thought we were going to be involved in a head-on collision".

Jason, 51, said he 'couldn't believe' the other motorist had driven away from the scene.

He said: "I'm just glad they are all safe and well. They were quite shaken when they got home and I still find it hard to believe that someone wouldn't stop in a situation like that.

"There seem to be quite a few people who think drivers go too fast down that road. Maybe it needs to be looked at."

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “We were called at 3.45pm on Monday, August 7, by a woman who said another vehicle had hit her wing mirror and smashed it.

“She did not manage to get the number plate of the other car. We don’t have any further information as the call ended after that.”
