FROM bingo nights to mountaineering in the snow, a Weymouth mother has pushed herself to the limit to raise thousands for an “invaluable and worthy cause.”

Mum-of-three Clare Ash has spent the last few years hosting fundraisers and taking on challenges to raise a staggering £12,000 for Weldmar Hospicecare having seen first-hand the work the charity does.

The 46-year-old was inspired to get involved when her cousin was diagnosed with cancer and spurred on by the death of her mother, Carol-Ann Hains, in July.

Clare said she initially felt “helpless” and decided to sign up for Weldmar’s Iceland trek to feel as though she was “doing something positive.”

She said: “Iceland was an incredible experience as the terrain was so varied, challenging and yet therapeutic. I felt overwhelmed by how privileged I was to see the exceptional Northern Lights and at the same time raise money for Weldmar.”

Following in the footsteps of her mum, who was instrumental in fundraising for Chickerell’s Willowbed Hall and for the area’s youth club, Clare has gone on to host many charity events ranging from sponsored walks to 80s fancy dress nights.

Plans are also in the pipeline to honour her mother’s memory with a day-long fun day event called “Mamafest” complete with music and live entertainment for all.

She said: “I'm excited and delighted to continue my fundraising mission as I passionately believe Weldmar is an invaluable and worthy cause.

“We would have loved mum to go into Weldmar’s care, but she got so ill so quickly there was no time.

“It’s a wonderful place - calming, not clinical at all. People are made so comfortable and you can visit people at any time.

“It’s a home from home. And there is so much extra offered, such as family support, support for children. They will do anything to fulfil people’s wishes and make special memories for them.”

Weldmar’s October 2018 overseas challenge is to Nepal and includes two days helping at the Kathmandu hospice care facility.
