A young Rotary Club will be putting on a couple of events for charity in the coming weeks.

The Poundbury Rotary Club will be putting on a quiz at the Brownsword Hall in aid of a local charity on Friday, September 8, and then a curry night on Wednesday, September 20, at the Spice Centre in Dorchester.

Because the last quiz the club held was extremely popular, anyone who wishes to take part in the upcoming quiz is encouraged to book the quiz in advance.

Poundbury Rotary Club is now four years old and is a service club for both men and women striving to uphold the ethos of Rotary International, while also being relaxed, fun and modern in structure.

The club meets every Friday at The Café on the Green in Poundbury from 7.30am to 8.30am for a breakfast of toast, croissants and coffee.

The group boasts a wide range of ages, with members aged from 26 to 80. There is also a wide mixture of occupations in the club, from stockbrokers, solicitors and bankers to builders, reflexologists and teachers.

At a recent meeting at The Café on the Green, a Rotary member shared his and his new wife’s experience of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro together for their honeymoon.

Kilimanjaro is a whopping 5,895 metres above sea level and is the result of a volcanic eruption around 150,000 years ago.

Keith and Brenda Taylor decided a while ago that the climb would be a good way of celebrating their newly wedded status.

Despite being keen walkers and explorers, they found the climb challenging, though they were helped out by two guides and some nine bearers carrying everything from food and water to tent equipment, eventually making it to the top.

At the same meeting, the club was presented with a lectern and gavel originally owned by the recently disbanded Inner Wheel Club, redesigned with the Rotary logo – enabling a little piece of local history to continue.
