A huge Dorset car show has managed to raise a truckload of money for charity.

The two day Sherborne Classic and Supercars Show at Sherborne Castle attracted 13,000 car enthusiasts to raise money for Cancer Research UK and a number of local charities.

It is the last time the show will be held as a two day event because of concerns that bad weather across the two days, combined with the cars parking on the grounds, would risk the integrity of the site.

People of all ages came to enjoy the displays and various activities on offer, with youngsters particularly enjoying the slot car racing and the World Rally car simulator at the show.

Anyone could come along to the event with their classic car or supercar, with or without pre-booking, and there were more on-the-day entries at the show than ever before.

Nigel Young, the show chairman, said: "The show was highly successful. We had more visitors coming, we had more cars registered and that was very pleasing."

He added: "The general mood was absolutely brilliant. We have these tours come in and they are really top end and on the show ground we had 31 different car clubs attending this year, which is absolutely brilliant."

He said that there were a huge range of cars on display, including rally cars, hot rod cars and muscle cars.

Mr Young said: "We had a very successful PistonHeads tour come in with a big range of cars from that tour and then we had a tour of rally cars and a Lamborghini tour come in as well. It is what we have had for some time now and this is what people love to see."

Mr Young could not yet reveal precisely how much money was raised by the event, but he confirmed it was significant sum.

He said: "Again, we are able to give away a truly substantial amount of money to Cancer Research UK and other charities."

The money will be given to the charities at a special cheque presentation on Friday, November 17, on the castle grounds.

Next year's show will take place on one day on Sunday, July 15.
