It was ready, set, glow as runners lit up the night for charity.

Dorset Neon Run took place at Lodmoor Country Park in Weymouth on Saturday night, and the park was awash with bright colours.

Organised by, and in aid of, Dorset disability charity Diverse Abilities, the challenge saw more than 100 runners head through the country park, lighting their way with glow sticks and torches in what was an event debut.

About £5,000 has been raised in sponsorship so far, though the figure is expected to rise.

On the night, a Weymouth Clubbercise instructor led an energising warm-up before participants set off to light up the night along the 5k route.

With plenty of food stands and refreshments for both runners and supporters, there was a ‘fantastic and friendly’ atmosphere as families gathered to cheer on their loved ones.

Diverse Abilities supports children and adults with disabilities in Dorset.

The charity’s fundraising manager, Ashley Weedon, said: “It was great. It went really, really well and we’re very pleased as it was out first year. It was great for raising money but also for raising awareness of who we are.

“There was a good turnout and everyone seemed to enjoy the festival atmosphere. It was lovely.

“We had a lot of last minute entries and so we’re still working how much we managed to raise, but we’re very pleased.”

The operational team at HMCTS Dorset Magistrates was just one group to take part in the fundraiser.

Team member Maggie said: “We all had so much fun at the charity’s last event raising money for Diverse Abilities. As it is a local charity, it is great being able to see how the money raised is being used to help local people. It’s an amazing charity.”

Diverse Abilities is a lifeline to many families in Dorset and aims to give those it supports an encouraging future by providing round-the-clock care and support.

Ashley added: “The money will go towards helping and supporting children and adults in Dorset. For a first event, we’re very pleased and look forward to it being bigger and better next year. This event bodes well for the future.”
