ART and science will come together as a fun chapter opens at Weymouth Library.

The library is taking part in Fun Palaces 2017, an international celebration of community which brings people together with arts, science, crafts and technology with free activities on Saturday, October 7.

Events will run from 10am-3pm and everyone is invited to "experience the library as they’ve never seen it before".

Nathalie Carter from the library said staff were working hard to ensure the event, which is for adults and children alike, is a success.

She said: "It’s all about bringing the community together, celebrating creativity and most importantly having fun.

"Fun and creative ideas will be flowing all day for people to come and enjoy the free activities we have on offer.

“Come on your own, bring a friend or invite the whole family. You’ll come for an hour and stay all day.”

Fun Palaces is based on an idea by the theatre director Joan Littlewood who in 1961 wanted to create a free community arts centre – a '"laboratory of fun". She and the architect Cedric Price drew up plans for such a venture in London but it never came to fruition.

The idea was revived by writer and theatre-maker Stella Duffy who invited interest from communities to create their own Fun Palaces. In the first year of its conception, in 2014, more than 138 venues, locations, communities and groups created their own events in the UK and around the world with around 40,000 people participating.

By 2016, 292 Fun Palaces across the world were made by 4,800 people with 124,000 taking part.

At Weymouth Library's Fun Palace there will be amazing creatures courtesy of Bugfest, an opportunity to learn to play the ukulele with the Daisy Ukuladies, or write a poem with the Harbour Poets. Sea Life Centre staff are bringing their mobile rockpool and there will also be a community art project to take part in. There is also the chance to learn Spanish, knitting, play with the Ozobots and create a fantastic ‘altered book’. A pop-up café will also be serving refreshments with cakes and biscuits donated by Asda.

Nathalie added: "Fun Palaces create events that bring together arts and sciences – but above all people – to work together, create together, have fun together, and in doing so, build our own communities, from the grassroots up."
