A teenage boy was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a collision with a van.

Newstead Road, near Asda in Weymouth, was closed following the incident and emergency services were called to the scene yesterday afternoon.

Police said the casualty, a teenage boy, who is believed to be aged 16, was in collision with a white Nissan van registered to a company in Slough, Berkshire, as he crossed the road.

Onlookers described how the boy got off the bus on Newstead Road before crossing over towards the supermarket.

A bystander said: “He walked around the front of the bus then the van came down the side and he went flying.

“We got off to check what had happened. I phoned his mum and told her.”

He was treated by paramedics before being taken away from the scene by an ambulance to the nearby Marsh playing fields where the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance landed.

His family were with him.

The boy was flown to Southampton General Hospital to be treated for injuries described as “serious but not life threatening”.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “We were called at 3.40pm to a report of a road traffic collision between a pedestrian and a car on Newstead Road in Weymouth. Officers attended the scene and we were called by the ambulance service.”

Paul Holroyd, the First bus driver, who dropped off the teenage boy, said: “I heard him collide with the van.”
Bystanders shared their concerns about the teenage boy’s wellbeing.

Maureen Ellis, a resident, said: “My daughter phoned me and told me about the blocked road and what happened and to be careful. I thought what if it was my grandson. I hope he is alright.”

Mr Raines, a resident, said: “It must have been serious. He was there for a long time. At least he has been taken by an ambulance.”

The incident caused traffic disruption, with diversions in place while the road was closed.

Newstead Road was reopened later in the afternoon at 5.15pm with bus routes returning to normal after the incident.
