Drivers were advised to avoid driving through an area of Wool after reports of damage to a gas main.
The A352 was closed both ways following the incident and traffic slowed between B3071 Station Road and Burton Road.
Dorset Police attended the scene.
A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "There is an incident on-going in Wool. Road closures are in place. Please avoid the area."
"Dorset Police received a report at 12.45pm of a gas leak in Dorchester Road, Wool.
"The gas board and fire service was alerted and a 60 metre exclusion zone has been put in place."
The road was closed between Burton Cross roundabout and the roundabout at the junction with Tout Hill. East Burton Road was also closed during the incident and motorists were advised to avoid the area.
The road closures were lifted at 2.10pm and the exclusion zone was removed.
