Stove and fireplace owners in Dorset are being urged to check what they burn as they warm up their homes in dropping temperatures. 

Those looking to fire up their appliances are advised to make sure they are not burning unseasoned firewood in order to improve the area’s air quality.

Unseasoned firewood gives off harmful smoke and emits less heat whereas seasoned logs are said to be better for appliances, chimneys and fuel bills. 

Consumers can look for ‘Ready to Burn’ labels which show if logs are ready for use, and contain less than 20 per cent moisture. These logs burn more efficiently than unseasoned green wood and reduce the impact on the environment. 

Cllr Ray Nowak, spokesman for environment and sustainability at Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, said: “Burning seasoned firewood is better for the environment, helps keep our air cleaner and reduces fuel bills.

"An unseasoned two kilogram log with 50 per cent moisture is half water, which means it is one litre water. No wonder it is inefficient.” 

There are currently no Air Quality Management Areas in the borough of Weymouth and Portland.
