A couple of mental health workers have launched a community sailing project to promote mental well-being.

Kiri Derham and her partner Matt Kitching have set up Sail Lias, a charity offering subsidised sailing lessons to people experiencing mental health issues.

The sessions, which are run in association with the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, are designed to aid mental health recovery by promoting independence and boosting self-esteem.

The lessons help adults suffering social isolation, anxiety, depression, psychosis and other mental health issues to engage in the community and gain RYA recognised sailing qualifications.

Kiri, 29, from Weymouth, said she was inspired by her own experiences after she began sailing five years ago.

She said: “It is because of my own mental health problems that I felt I wanted to something for other people. Sailing was a big part of my recovery and I wanted to help people who don’t always get the opportunity to do these things.”

Both Kiri and Matt are mental health workers in Weymouth and Portland and are aware off the benefits outdoor activities can have.

Kiri said: “More needs to be done and we plan to implement this to provide them with the best quality of life they can experience.

“As professionals in this area, we are aware and experienced on how to de-escalate behaviour when it may become unmanageable, upsetting or frightening for the individual.”

Kiri and Matt worked hard to secure the necessary funding and have recently been awarded a £5000 from Tesco Bags of Help meaning they can run each session for a subsidised cost of £5 per person.

However, the pair are still seeking more funding to secure the project long-term.

Tim Anderton, funding and development manager at the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, said: “It’s not just about getting people out sailing, it is about using it as a tool to tackle whatever problems people have.

“We are able to push people out of their comfort zones in a safe environment and help them overcome all sorts of barriers.

“It also helps people develop trust. A lot of the time, it is not necessarily about learning to trust each other but learning to trust themselves.”

The next session will run from 9.30am to 12.30pm at the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy on Sunday, October 29.
