A woman is appealing for the public’s help after her elderly mother lost her wedding ring while out shopping in Weymouth.

Paula Hartley is appealing to shoppers and residents to help track down her 84-year-old mother’s treasured wedding ring - which she lost after 60 years of marriage.

Norma Houghton is said to have been devastated when her ring went missing on Wednesday when she was shopping at Morrisons on Dorchester Road.

Paula said: “She’s really upset. She’s trying to be brave but obviously it’s really upset her.”

Mrs Houghton left the supermarket after she got cold in the chiller aisle and stepped outside and as she was crossing the car park, she discovered her ring was gone.

Paula added Mrs Houghton and her husband Ronald celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in March this year.

“The ring obviously has huge sentimental value, especially after 60 years of marriage,” she said.

Norma and Ronald met in their twenties at Alexandra Palace in London, which was then one of the top roller-skating clubs in the country - where they shared a passion for the fast-paced sport.

In 1959, two years after they were married, the couple moved to Weymouth to join in the infamous skating scene in the town and Sidney Hall, which was used as a skating rink between 1951 and the 1970s.

The pair spent most of their lives living in Rodwell but moved to a bungalow in Preston a few years ago to make life a little easier.

Mrs Houghton’s lost wedding ring is a medium sized, yellow gold band with a pattern cut into it.

It is believed she lost the ring at around 4pm on Wednesday, October 25 either in Morrisons or in the car park near the drop off point.

Anyone who may have found the missing ring is asked to get in touch.
