A boxing fundraiser at Weymouth Pavilion is set to be a smash hit.

A Night of Boxing will take place in the Pavilion’s Ocean Room on Saturday, November 18 and will see fighters travel from across the country to compete.

The event is in aid of Weymouth Amateur Boxing Club’s proposal to buy a new clubhouse at the marsh playing fields.

The Weymouth Amateur Boxing Club is currently based in Hardwick Street and has been there since 1951.

It is hoped that a new club will help meet the rising demand of the club’s membership and offer parking.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a three-course dinner while they watch fighters punch, block and dodge their way to victory at the fundraiser.

There will be a charity auction with some impressive prizes, including a pair of boxing gloves signed by world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

The event comes after Weymouth and Portland Borough Council recently agreed to provide a grant of £30,000 to the club with councillors hailing it a source of great good in the community.

Leader of Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, Councillor Jeff Cant, recently attended a boxing session at the club’s current premise to show the council’s support for the club’s proposal.

Mr Cant said: “They really do make a difference to the lives of many of our young people and are worth supporting.”

Boxing coach and club member Mark Ford said: “Jeff came and showed his support for the boxing club after I invited him to one of our training sessions. It’s good for him to see what we do.”

“We are very happy with the council and its support through their grant. We didn’t expect to be given it.

“We want to introduce more people to boxing to encourage health and fitness.”

The total cost of the new clubhouse is estimated to be £340,000, which has led the club to continue its fundraising efforts.

Tickets to the boxing event cost £40 and include a three course meal. Tickets can be bought from Weymouth Pavilion.

Tickets can be reserved either by emailing your interest to info@weymouthabc.co.uk or by phoning Dave on 07899 925316. The dress code is black tie or lounge suit. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.
