A Brand new exhibition showcasing Poundbury's 'iconic' architecture has gone on display last weekend.

Artist Rowan Barnes-Murphy's intricate drawings of local buildings is now on display at the Gallery on the Square.

Mr Barnes-Murphy, who has owned a house in the area for 17 years, said Poundbury was the perfect subject as people were drawn to Poundbury because of its particular architecture.

He added he chose certain buildings, showing a mix of both iconic buildings such as Strathmore House and the Duchess of Cornwall Inn on Queen Mother Square and smaller residential houses with "interesting character".

The exhibition opened with a preview on Friday evening (November 10) and went on general display on Saturday comprising small and large paintings of beautiful architecture so integral to the area.

Mr Barnes-Murphy said: "The preview was brilliant. It was packed full and lots of people were interested so we'll just have to see how it pans out."

He added he had "thoroughly enjoyed" the process of creating the exhibition.

Rowan Barnes Murphy said he had mad a living out of illustration for more than 40 years and had recently turned his hand to paintings and exhibitions.

"I've done a few exhibitions now and it's a very enjoyable process to have an idea and to work to a deadline. I'm really proud of it. It's great to have a big room and fill it up with work," he said.

Gallery owner, David Murdock said: "We had lots of people here on the preview evening. There's obviously a lot of interest because it was a huge turn out. There were a lot of people constantly providing comments."

He added he thought Mr Barnes-Murphy's paintings made excellent Christmas presents for people living in Poundbury.

"It's surprising no one so far has taken an interest in Poundbury in this way but I think we have other artists who are now working on projects around Poundbury," he said.

After leaving Cambridge Art College, Rowan Barnes-Murphy worked as a freelance illustrator and his drawings can be regularly found in magazines and newspapers all over the world including the Times, the Independent and the New York Times.

He illustrated the Arts section of Punch magazine for many years and has produced work for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the BBC, The Savoy Hotel and Moet and Chandon.

He has also created an extensive portfolio of images and characters for children’s and adults’ books for most of the major publishing houses both in the UK and USA.

The exhibition will be on display at the Gallery on the Square until the end of December 2017.
