A bus transformed into a shelter for homeless people in Weymouth finally has a proposed location.

An application has been submitted to Weymouth and Portland Borough Council for The Bus Shelter Dorset to be located at Beach car park on Lodmoor Way in Weymouth.

Set up by Emily and Eddie McCarron, the initiative aims to change the lives of homeless people in the town by getting them off the streets and back on the right track.

Emily and Eddie, along with support from the community, have worked tirelessly over the last year to transform the bus into a shelter.

The double-decker bus has been converted to allow up to 17 adults to sleep overnight with a mobile single shower/kitchen trailer and Portaloo.

If agreed, the council will erect Heras fencing around the site area to enclose and for security measures.

Emily said: "We have been in talks with the council for a number of months and from that we have got to a point where a location has been offered and will hopefully be agreed by councillors.

"We didn't want to bus to disturb anyone so the location at Lodmoor is brilliant, close enough to the town centre but not on top of residential houses.

"A year ago we didn't think we would be where we are today, it's really exciting."

Cllr James Farquharson who represents the Preston ward said: "There have been a lot of people approaching myself and the council asking us to find a location for the bus shelter - the initiative has a lot of support.

"My only concerns about the bus were that it could attract homeless people from outside of Weymouth and we are already facing a big enough problem with this area and that the bus could lead to anti-social behaviour.

"We also didn't want people to think the shelter was a solution, but we have been assured that it is a stopping point to get people off the streets until more suitable accommodation can be found.

"I think it is great that this space is an option for the shelter and hopefully it will be approved by councillors on a trial basis."

Cllr Kate Wheller has been a keen supporter of the bus shelter since from the start.

She said: "I am absolutely delighted and I hope councillors agree to approve this and we can move the process forward as quickly as possible.

"The weather is now changing, it's getting cold at night and we need to get people off the streets if they are going to survive the winter."

The application will be considered by the Weymouth and Portland Borough Council planning committee at a date to be confirmed.
