A cancer support group rolled up their sleeves to brighten up an orchard in memory of a 'truly special' Weymouth woman.

Members of GO Girls! cancer support group gathered at a community orchard to plant daffodils in memory of Jan Hinton, 59, from Littlemoor who passed away from ovarian cancer last year.

Teresa Wolff, vice chair of GO Girls! said: “It’s nearly the anniversary of Jan’s passing and we wanted to mark this by planting lots of daffodils at the community orchard established in her name – we’ll be able to see the results of our planting in March."

With the sun shining brightly friends and family, including Jan’s daughters, Natalee Kavanagh and Verity Newnham, joined the GO Girls! at the orchard in Littlemoor to plant spring bulbs.

Verity said: “It felt really special. There was a shower and then a beautiful rainbow – we really felt mum was with us. We hope the orchard will fill with spring flowers to blossom in her memory along with all the fruit trees. In 100 years’ time, when we are no longer here, this legacy will live on for all the community to enjoy."

Teresa added: “It’s humbling to know that our hard digging will give such pleasure in years to come – Jan was a truly special Go Girl – she will always be remembered now and in many years to come."

GO Girls! formed in 2015 and since then have grown very quickly to provide much needed support to people affected by gynaecological cancers at very difficult times of their lives.

This year, GO Girls! have raised £25,000 to support Dorset County Hospital’s Cancer Appeal, raising funds to support a counselling suite in the new build.

“We know women suffering from gynaecological cancers require a lot of support; they face many challenges and to have supported this counselling suite will give women and others facing cancer just that – a quiet space for reflection and to receive the support they so rightly deserve - we have been delighted to help support our local hospital,” said Teresa.
