TWO students from Dorchester made and sold cakes to their classmates to raise money for charity.

Emma Betts and Isabella White, who both attend Thomas Hardye School, held a number of cake sales over school breaks and lunchtimes to raise money for Save the Children and Weldmar Hospicecare.

The pair decided to fundraise for the volunteering section of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and managed to raise a total of £320 which has been split between the two charities.

Emma explained that they each chose a charity to fundraise for and she chose Weldmar, who helped to support her mum’s friend until her death.

Emma said: “We decided to raise money by holding cake sales over school breaks and lunch times.

“We did this for three months and raised over £320 in total.

“We decided to divide this between two charities - Save the Children and Weldmar Hospicecare.

“We each picked a charity and I chose to give half to Weldmar as one of my mum’s friends, Emma McConnell, spent her final days there, as did our neighbour Margery.”

Emma and Isabella presented their cheque for £163.70 to Diane Bentley, Weldmar’s Community Engagement Fundraiser at the beginning of November.

Diane welcomed the donation, which will help Weldmar to continue providing end of life care for people living in Dorset.

She said “Everyone at Weldmar Hospicecare is truly grateful to Emma and Isabella for choosing to support us – and to everyone who bought their cakes.”

Weldmar relies very heavily on the support of our local community, as 75% of the funds we need each year to provide our outstanding services come from them”.
